Miscarriage, cuase and symptoms

Symptoms of Miscarriage :

-Bleeding from the vagina, either spotting or heavier

-Mucus in the blood  that has leaked from the vagina

-Backache and abdominal cramps

-Disappearance of the signs of pregnancy

What Causes it?

Defect in the egg or sperm resulting in an abnormal fetus.

Abnormally shaped uterus

Uterine fibroids

Incompetent cervix when the cervix opens rather than remains closed until labour begins.

Placenta insufficiency; the placenta fails or does not develop properly to nourish the fetus.

Uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure.

Rhesus incompatibility.

Bacterial or virus infections such as syphilis or rubella

Types of Miscarriage

There are several types of first trimester miscarriages:

Threatened miscarriage;

 Where there is spotting of blood, sometimes when the period would have been due, but the cervix  is closed. This does not invariably lead to the loss of the fetus.

Inevitable miscarriage;

Which is accompanied by more severe vaginal bleeding and pain because the uterus is contracting.  Virtually nothing can prevent the expulsion of the fetus.

Missed abortion;

in which the fetus dies, but remains there.

What can I do?

Whatever the reason for the miscarriage and whatever the treatment your doctor describes, the emotional affects can be devastating. As well as the natural feelings of grief, you will probably feel angry that your body has let you down.

The one emotion you must try to combat is guilt.  It is not your fault and, although you may feel like hiding yourself away and perhaps punishing  yourself, this is not the way to get back to normal. Try not to isolate yourself and be positive what you can do in the future.

Anxiety is one of the emotional factors that can result in a failure to conceive. Your doctor should give you an honest answer as soon as possible about whether you can successfully carry a baby to full term without medical treatment. If it is possible, keep trying but try not to be obsessive.

A miscarriage is a true bereavement and is very difficult to cope with. Counselling might help and is available.

You can resume intercourse within about three weeks, when the bleeding has stopped and the cervix closed. You will probably have to wait for at least two complete menstrual periods before trying to conceive again.
